The bulbs you get at most big box stores will be a little more cost effective because they have copper bases. We have found that with Colorado weather conditions these bulbs don’t last long, the main reason is when the base comes in contact with moister it tends to corrode much like old connectors on a car battery do. We want our displays to last thru harsh winters and keep your house lit for the holidays. We like to use the thicker wire when stringing our lights as well. They call this wire SPT-2, which basically means it is a 10 amp wire. The alternative is SPT-1 which is a 8amp wire. Both work, and the 8amp wire is a litter easier to work with because it bends and cuts better especially in the cold. The reason we like to use the thicker wire is again for durability and reliability. The SPT-2 wire is less likely to have issues such as a squirrel chewing thru the wire. It also allow more electricity to flow thru it reducing the risk of causing your breaker to trip. It allows us to put more bulbs on a single string which for big displays allows us to install a cleaner appearance reducing the amount of extension cords needed.
